My childhood had its share of pain but I am a survivor. My early pain helped me find my purpose in God. I remember talking to the Divine as I stood in my crib in footsie pajamas. As a pre-schooler I knew the adults around me would not understand and it was best to keep it to myself. My unorthodox faith kept me through childhood, young adult wanderings and my journey as a minister in the church. When I accepted my call to ministry, I knew where God had brought me from and I wanted to share that good news with other people. When I jumped into full time ministry with a commitment to serve the poor I had no idea the expectation would be that I’d shake down the poor people I served for my survival.

This didn’t agree with my constitution so I asked God to show me another way. Soon, my soulprenuer model of ministry came to life where my young adult members coming out of the street life, prison and mental health issues began working together developing social enterprises to uplift each of them out of the underground economy and pay the church bills

Years later, I applied the lessons of my pastoral ministry to recreating my non-profit organization which was also operating from a mindset of begging and lack. By faith — I converted our organization from its grant-to-grant, donation to donation existence to a self-sustaining model of programing and community building through social enterprise.

Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.

Over the last 20+ years, I’ve also been mentoring and developing other leaders with a heart for this kind of ministry. My model has a proven track record of equipping motivated, passionate change-makers to launch ventures in the world that do good as they also provide for themselves.

If this idea excites you — it would be my honor to help you move forward with your good work through what I call soulpreneurship.
